What is FTP? and What does it stand for?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. A basic definition is 'A mechanism for transferring bulk data files between different end-user machines across a network or the internet'.

Why should I use FTP and not standard HTTP downloads?

HTTP was never intended to be used to transfer bulk files between different end-users machines. HTTP will continuosly check, in a two way communication during transmission to make sure that each and every bit of data is sent and received before sending the next file, therefore it is extremely slow.

FTP is a dedicated protocol solely used to transfer bulk files e.g. Architectual drawings, photo images, digital art and any other bulk files. FTP transfers files quicker than HTTP because it doe's not require the two way communication like HTTP does, FTP just checks the beginning and the end of the file. FTP will connect to the FTP server ports and transfer the file to is destination in a fast and streamlined manor. FTP can also resume broken file downloads or uploads, for instance if your in the middle of transferring a large file and your internet connection drops or is interrupted, you can resume the transfer from where it stopped once your internet connection is live again.

It takes the strain off your internet connection as your clients will be sending/downloading your files between themselves and ChunkyChips servers at increased bandwidth speeds.
Files located on the ChunkyChips FTP Servers are backed up in the event of a major systems failure.
Your FTP Server space can be accessed from anywhere in the world.

What do I use to upload or download using FTP?

There are several ways to connect to an FTP server. The most common way is to connect using an FTP Client software or you can just use Internet Explorer. Using a web browser on a MAC is not very useful as MAC do not allow you to upload files to FTP Servers. You can download ok but uploading is restricted by MAC OS, unless you use FTP client software which works fine. ChunkyChips.net are also currently in development stages of producing our very own Web-Based FTP Client which means you will be able to upload/download and modify file and folder permissions using any computer anywhere in the world! ChunkyChips.net will announce its launch as soon as the development is finished.

Standard ChunkyFTP Costs

The costs for the ChunkyChips FTP Service is calculated by how much storage space you require. Therefore obviously the larger the files the more space you will need. You can also upgrade your space at a later date if required. All standard ChunkyFTP accounts are subject to a £99.00 setup fee.
